We do not outsource or use proprietary platforms such as Discord for our telecommunications. No real Linux community, surely no FOSS community, would use closed-source proprietary platforms such as Discord for their telecommunication needs, when they can host their own on Linux !

Matrix is an open network for secure, decentralized communication, which affords us the option of hosting our own federated "homeserver" for fully decentralized secure open-source in-house telecommunication services that is not reliant on any service provider or third-parties. Matrix is far superior technology to Discord in many ways, and you can make it even more so being FOSS. The Matrix is calling you, don't be stuck in the closed-source proprietary fake world of Discord.

Invite Only

Due to Matrix homeservers being wide open, the wild-west, we have made the matrix.jaxlug.ngo server invite only due to limited financial resources and abuse, as the JaxLUG's Matrix homeserver is intended to provide in-house audio, video, and text telecommunication services for JaxLUG members only. Not only can JaxLUG members join the invite only JaxLUG Matrix homeserver, but JaxLUG members can create their own private, optionally encrypted, Matrix Space and Rooms for their own purposes, or for other groups.

Therefore, to join matrix.jaxlug.ngo, it is required to,

  1. Subscribe to, and join our mailing list;
  2. Make a public post, send an email using your legal first and last name, associated with your email address;
  3. In which case, a representative of the Jacksonville Linux User Group Inc. will email you an invite link.

If the above does not interest you, you can always send a private email with the same information to admin@jaxlug.ngo. This is necessary due to limited financial resources and making the most of server resources for JaxLUG members first, and to prevent abuse in both people joining the matrix.jaxlug.ngo and creating unwanted spaces and rooms. This server maybe extended in the future to providing services for others, beyond JaxLUG members.

Your Homeserver

Own your data, for full control, you also have the option of hosting and running your own personal Matrix homeserver! You can connect to the JaxLUG Matrix Homeserver and many others Matrix homesevers, along with the choice to Federate or not. The options are limitless, as it should be with FOSS. The JaxLUG is happy to help facilitate and empower others, and can even go so far as to providing a cloned copy on request of our Matrix Linode server, matrix.jaxlug.ngo, to help you hit the ground running.
