Recycle

The Jacksonville Linux Users Group Inc. is extremely proud to announce its most ambitious project ever, the new JaxLUG Recycle Program a.k.a Project Phoenix, where the JaxLUG will regenerate, rejuvenate, otherwise born again select recycled desktop, laptops, and embedded devices, freeing them of the burden of their horrible, formerly constrained, life running proprietary software, MacOS, Windows, and others, giving them new life, born again, in the light and power of the Linux operating system a.k.a Penguin Power.

In the JaxLUG Recycle Program, Project Phoenix, anyone, not just locals, can donate still useful, fully working components and full systems; desktops, laptops, and embedded devices. Not all equipment will be accepted, as some criteria will be applied to ensure utility. This ground breaking program will provide the following benefits.

  1. Extend the life of equipment that might otherwise be destroyed; be kind to mother earth.
  2. Provide equipment for locals to install Linux on; learn linux by installing it for others or yourself.
  3. Provide Linux systems to people who lack resources; paying it forward, empowering those less fortunate.
  4. Provide Linux systems for people to learn Linux; which allows them to cycle back to #2, install Linux for others.
  5. All donations are tax deductible as a charitable contribution; legal receipts issued from a 501c3.

There are likely many more benefits of the upcoming JaxLUG Recycle Program, Project Phoenix, and the JaxLUG looks forward to working with the local community, and hopefully, far beyond, on this exciting new project. We are still getting things setup and establishing a formal process, but in the mean time, feel free to reach out to us at admin@jaxlug.ngo if you are interested in donating before we are up and running.

What

Business and Individuals can make tax deductible in-kind donations and we will issue a fair-market value receipt for the donated equipment. For businesses or individuals that are upgrading systems or discarding any still useful and fully working older systems for any reason, including components such as stand-alone desktops and monitors, select hard drives, memory, and peripherals will be accepted, instead of tossing those systems, or discarding otherwise, they can now be donated to the JaxLUG, and we will install Linux on them and make the equipment available for others!

We do have some criteria, please be prepared to provide specifications of any donated equipment and hardware as we will not be accepting all donations. Our criteria is to ensure utility for the intended purposes and not to detract from the experience due to underpowered or faulty systems. We will publish the criteria as the project further develops, in the mean time, please send details and specifications of any items that your business or you would like to donate to admin@jaxlug.ngo.

Businesses

We want your old systems, and no you can't have ours!

Bulk equipment donations are desired, but we will accept singles as well as pallets. Please, contact us ahead of time before shipping any pallets, we will return-to-sender!

This project is to benefit individuals, we accept donations from businesses, but we do not allow businesses to take part in this project. If you are interested in similar offerings for your business, please contact us, and we can see about making the necessary arrangements for a tax deductible fee.

Individuals

We want your old systems too, but this is for YOU!

This project is for you, the individual. Need-a-penny, Take-a-penny. Have-a-penny, Leave-a-penny. That is the idea here, if you have some extra equipment, leave-a-future-penguin. If you need extra equipment a spare or second machine, or something because you have nothing, take-a-penguin. If you have some spare time and want to learn Linux, you can donate your time and birth a new penguin by installing Linux on a system to benefit someone else in the community, or even yourself; some penguins are selfish.

This project is intended to benefit individuals, to help raise the River City's tides, one water molecule at a time; a rising tide lifts all Penguins, and the Dolphins will be happy too!

Data Privacy

Please ensure any donated systems are fully erased and do not contain any sensitive information. While we will do our best to scrub ourselves via running tools such as Darik’s Boot and Nuke (DBAN) to erase any data, but these tools are not guaranteed. Our members will just be seeking to install Linux and not inspecting the systems otherwise, but we cannot ensure the usage of end users of the systems. We are not responsible for any issues arising from data remaining on donated systems. We may even go so far as to deny hard drive donations and install our own by default, though on some systems this may not be possible with soldered NVME and other solid state storage.
